About The Role:

Location: Manchester Central Convention Complex
Hours: Full-time, working 5 days over a 7 day period, with occasional weekend and evening work.

The Deputy Cleaning and Waste Manager supports the effective delivery of all cleaning and waste services across the venue, ensuring operational standards are met and exceeded in line with OCS expectations and the requirements of the client, MCCC. This role provides leadership and operational management to supervisors and shop-floor cleaning and waste teams, particularly during events, ensuring staff deployment and service delivery run smoothly and efficiently.

The Deputy Manager will act as the operational second-in-command, providing daily support to the Cleaning and Waste Manager and deputising in their absence.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Leadership:

  • Manage, lead, and support cleaning and waste supervisors and frontline staff during event and non-event operations.
  • Ensure effective staff deployment, including preparing event schedules, allocating duties, and adjusting resources as required.
  • Maintain high operational standards on the shop floor across all areas, ensuring cleaning and waste tasks are carried out to expected levels.

Service Delivery & Standards:

  • Ensure all cleaning and waste operations meet the service standards set by OCS and the client, MCCC.
  • Conduct regular audits throughout each month and implement improvement actions based on findings.
  • Support the Cleaning and Waste Manager in monitoring performance and ensuring compliance with contractual KPIs and SLAs.

Event Support:

  • Oversee cleaning and waste activities during events, including setup, live operations, and post-event turnaround.
  • Work flexibly to cover occasional weekend and evening events as required.
  • Share responsibility with the Cleaning and Waste Manager for managing Christmas party event coverage on alternate weeks.

People Management:

  • Support the supervision team with coaching, direction, and day-to-day leadership.
  • Assist in managing staffing levels, absence, performance issues, and training needs.
  • Promote a positive, safe, and productive culture among all cleaning and waste staff.

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Attend contract meetings alongside the Cleaning and Waste Manager, providing operational insight and updates.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams, event organisers, and stakeholders to ensure smooth service delivery.
  • Communicate operational plans, requirements, and updates clearly to supervisors and staff.

Health, Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure all staff follow safe working practices and comply with health and safety regulations.
  • Support risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective actions as required.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to audits, staffing, and compliance.

Skills & Experience Required:

Essential:

  • Experience supervising or managing cleaning and/or waste teams in a large venue, commercial, or event environment.
  • Strong organisational and operational planning abilities.
  • Ability to lead teams confidently during demanding event periods.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly, including occasional weekends and evenings.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of auditing processes, KPIs, and quality standards.
  • First-line management experience (supervisory/shift-lead level or higher)
  • Administration experience
  • Experience and management of a time and attendance system.

Personal Attributes:

  • Reliable, proactive, and adaptable.
  • Calm under pressure, especially during live event operations.
  • Able to lead by example and motivate teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
